imagemagick

imagemagick is a foss software sutdio for displaying, creating, converting, modifying and editing raster images. it is basically ffmpeg for images.

the name imagemagick comes from the magical numbers that are used to identify an images file format.

history

imagemagick was created in 1987 by john cristy. its main usage was to convert images from 24-bit to 8-bit so they could be displayed on commonly used screens.

in 1990 the copyright was transfered to imagemagick studio llc. this also marked the point where this software was released freely.

eversince, imagemagick studio llc is the maintainer organisation.

usage

create image:

magick -size 800x800 xc:white white.png

convert image:

magick rose.jpg rose.png

resize image and convert it:

magick rose.jpg -resize 50% rose.png

get info about an image:

magick identify -verbose rose.jpg
